ELSEWHERE/FORWARD
ABOUT THE FILM
"Elsewhere/Forward," written and directed by Eduardo Garcia, is a reenactment of personal experiences. At its core, it's a story about loneliness and the attempt to hang on to memories. The overwhelming emotions portrayed by the film come together to create a nostalgic feeling that is universally understood.
The film mostly takes place inside a car, during a conversation between two friends, Edd & Seb. The character of Edd, played by the director Eduardo Garcia, seems to be lost within the chaos of his own mind, unexpectedly being transported to different memories. These memories represent a journey of difficult emotions, including: the struggle with abandonment, the need for family, the absence of home, and unrealized love. Seb, played by Tayo Sonuga, is the anchor that keeps Edd grounded. His dialogue lights the way when Edd is trapped in a dark place, reminding him that everything will be okay.
'HOME' BY GOOD TALK
FEATURED SONG
The film features the song 'Home' by Good Talk, composed by the band's lead singer, Gian Gavidia. This rendition was recorded live during a set organized by Gavidia and Eduardo Garcia, who have been close friends since childhood.
"'Home' starts with a mysterious feeling, like I can't quite see what's ahead. Weird guitar sounds kind of capture that confusion. Then the whole band crashes in, loud and super upfront. In the song, I'm talking to myself, questioning this person, singing things like 'Can't you see you're my company?' or 'Can't you breathe the same air?'
The whole song is about this ache I have, this feeling of being lost and unsafe, like I can't find my way back to wherever 'home' is. It gets to the point where I start to doubt myself, wondering if there's something I'm missing, something wrong with me that's pushing this person away. The music gets all messed up here too, mirroring how all over the place I feel.
But then there's a shift. Suddenly, I sing about how this person makes everything okay. It's like "I am home again, in these arms again." By the end, I'm basically saying "I'm home" because this person makes me feel like I finally belong somewhere." - Gian Gavidia
The director, reminded of this song during film production, knew it was the only sound that could portray the film's message. Knowing it was composed by a friend who had always made him feel at home, only made it more powerful.
